Medical and clinical waste

The healthcare industry is diverse, as are the waste streams it generates. The disposal of hazardous medical waste presents complex safety, operational, regulatory and environmental challenges for the sector. SUEZ is a total waste management partner, with the expertise, technology and infrastructure to ensure that the management of biological and other clinical waste is in line with state and federal legislative and licencing requirements and codes of practice.

Waste streams

A solution for every challenge

The healthcare sector generates a large number of individual waste streams, each with their own collection and treatment requirements. SUEZ delivers optimal solutions to handle all waste streams for hospitals, clinics and other health services. This ensures all cytotoxic, pharmaceutical and anatomical waste is incinerated as per legislation and code of practice.

Clinical waste

Clinical or biohazard waste is that which is classified as having the potential to cause injury, infection and offence to the general population. SUEZ offers a range of clinical waste containers and bins for items such as sharps, human tissue, materials contaminated with blood or bodily fluids, laboratory waste or animal waste generated by medical, dental or veterinary research or treatment.

Cytotoxic waste

Cytotoxic waste includes materials or pharmaceuticals which are carcinogenic, cytostatic, cytotoxic, mutagenic and/or teratogenic. It also includes materials associated with their administration, such as needles, syringes, intravenous appliances, ampoules, vials, gauzes, caps, gloves and swabs. In accordance with legislative requirements, waste is collected in SUEZ’s clearly labelled and colour-coded cytotoxic waste bins and securely incinerated in our specialist facilities.

Pharmaceutical waste

Pharmaceutical waste is defined as drugs, remedies or medications, with the exception of cytotoxins, that have either expired or are no longer required. It also includes waste materials or substances generated in the manufacture and administration of pharmaceuticals. SUEZ collects and securely incinerates these items for hospitals, pharmacies, medical centres, veterinary practices and other facilities.

Anatomical waste

Anatomical waste consists of human tissues, organs, body parts, pathological specimens and body tissue taken during laboratory testing, surgery or treatment. It also includes animal carcasses used in research. SUEZ offers specialised services for the collection and disposal of anatomical waste for hospitals and veterinary clinics, with various sized containers to meet all needs.

Sanitary waste

Our sanitary waste services offer facilities a tailored, discreet and hygienic solution for disposal and odour elimination. Waste is collected in slimline, user-friendly units and reliably and responsibly disposed of in line with all relevant health, safety and environmental regulations.

Amalgam

SUEZ offers specialist collection and treatment of dental amalgam and the associated chemical and containers used in its production, with individual 20-litre containers for secure separation of amalgam waste.

Laboratory waste

Laboratories can produce a wide range of industrial, hazardous and dangerous wastes. SUEZ is equipped to collect and treat laboratory wastes such as chemicals in liquid, powder or solid form, formaldehyde, contaminated materials such as spill kits, chlorinated and non-chlorinated solvents, alcohols and maintenance waste such as paints, oils and cloths, with a variety of containers to suit individual requirements.

X-rays

SUEZ offers dedicated x-ray collection and recycling services for x-ray films and developer and fixer liquids for hospitals and for medical, dentistry and veterinary facilities, with lockable collection bins to protect patient confidentiality. We process these unwanted materials to recover valuable resources such as silver, plastics and precious metals.
Recycling programs

Recovering valuable resources from waste

SUEZ is a leader in developing alternative resource recovery solutions for items that contain valuable re-usable materials. Our safe and sustainable offerings enable healthcare facilities to enhance their recycling practices and volumes and reduce their environmental footprint.

Sterile wrap

Sterile wrap constitutes a significant volume of the waste produced by hospitals. We collect clean, uncontaminated sterile wrap for consolidation, processing and recycling in our advanced facilities. This is then granulated and turned into pellets for use in the manufacture of new polypropylene products, helping hospitals dramatically reduce their impact on the environment.

Surgical instruments

A first of its kind resource recovery initiative in Australia, SUEZ collects and treats single-use medical-grade steel devices such as biopsy forceps, electrosurgery pencils, energy devices, linear cutters, laparoscopy scissors, ligation devices, staplers, surgical saw blades and drills, and trocars and other access systems. By treating these items, we recover valuable resources such as steel, titanium and aluminium and divert medical devices from incineration and landfill.

Clean plastics

Our specialist services in the recovery and recycling of theatre plastics provide hospitals with an opportunity to significantly reduce their waste volumes and increase recycling practices. We collect and treat used plastic dishes and bowls from hospital operating theatres, removing any remaining clinical wastes through high-temperature sanitising and processing for reuse in new polypropylene products.

PVC plastics

Plastics account for around one third of hospital general waste in Australia, with PVC an estimated quarter of that volume. Through the PVC Recycling in Hospitals Program, we collect used PVC medical products such as oxygen tubing, drained IV bags and oxygen masks for recycling into useful new products.
