SUEZ's Kemps Creek SAWT ARRT Facility is an example of tailoring resource recovery solutions to meet the specific needs of our customers. SUEZ developed the SUEZ Advanced Waste Treatment (SAWT) facility in Kemps Creek, NSW to manage two different waste streams - food and garden organics from Penrith City Council (PCC) and mixed solid waste (MSW) from Liverpool City Council (LCC).
The SAWT facility is a mechanical and biological treatment facility with two separate processing lines:
The organic material from each line is rapidly composted to produce mixed source and source-separated recycled organics products. This is achieved using sophisticated tunnel composting technology, which controls those elements of the composting process with the greatest impact on breakdown of the organic waste: temperature, moisture content, and aeration. Tunnel composting is followed by refinement of the material, with any contaminants (usually plastic) sifted out of the composted organics using a large trommel.
In NSW, stringent regulations are in place to control the quality of recycled organic products and their use for particular applications, which range from use in horticulture and agriculture for higher quality recycled organics to uses in forestry and mining rehabilitation for lower grade products. SUEZ manages all aspects of the process using documented quality management procedures to ensure each of the facilities products meet the quality specifications set by regulators and buyers of each product. This maximises the beneficial reuse of our customers' recovered resources.
The Kemps Creek SAWT Facility is currently licenced to process up to 134,000 tonnes of waste per annum, with approximately 55% of incoming material diverted from landfill. We are investigating further ARRT possibilities including:

SUEZ's Elizabeth Drive smart cell located at Kemps Creek in New South Wales, accepts non-putrescible and industrial waste.
The waste disposal technology used at the Elizabeth Drive smart cell is designed to allow waste to be deposited safely and securely, and to minimise risk to the environment, particularly in the long term. This involves stringent planning and engineering of the smart cell, with our plans and operations monitored by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Elizabeth Drive Landfill expansion proposal
SUEZ is proposing to expand the Elizabeth Drive Landfill at Kemps Creek, Sydney. This would involve increasing the height of the landfill by up to 15 metres, extending the life of the landfill by approximately 6 years.

SUEZ has a dedicated Environment Report Hotline for anyone living, or working, near one of our facilities in New South Wales, Victoria or Western Australia.
The hotline has been set up to receive feedback on environmental matters which are sometimes associated with recycling and waste management facilities – like odours, noise, dust and mud tracking.
This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your call will always be answered by a real person - not just an automated message - who will enter your feedback and forward it immediately to the staff at the facility. This allows us to take immediate action to determine the cause of any concerns you may have, and gives us the best chance of rectifying the situation quickly.
