The Vinca waste storage centre in Belgrade, Serbia
Since 1998, the Vinca landfill site has been the only waste storage facility in operation for the 2 million inhabitants of Greater Belgrade. It currently receives up to 1,200 tonnes of household waste per day, for a total volume of 11 million m3. In the absence of the necessary protective measures, this facility has a strong impact on the environment, and in particular on the quality of the water in the Danube, located 1.5 km downstream.
In response to a project launched by the Belgrade city authorities to meet European directives, SUEZ today propose adapted solutions designed to eliminate this immediate environmental threat and to treat the waste in the years to come thanks to a multi-process solution combining a household waste-to-energy centre using incineration, a construction waste recovery centre and storage sites for non-hazardous and inert waste.
